We live in a society moving at full speed toward the digital. Mobile payments, contactless cards, instant transfers… However, situations like yesterday's blackout in Spain remind us that cash remains a fundamental pillar of our daily lives. A simple, accessible and reliable tool that, when technology fails, shows its true value.
In the midst of this crisis, Loomis, a leader in cash management and ATM support, played a crucial role. Thanks to our efficiency and forward planning, more than 50% of scheduled cash loads were completed before the power cut. This effort allowed many citizens to access cash when they needed it most.
The impact was clear: approximately 80% of ATMs were left out of service due to the lack of power supply. Only those located in buildings or shopping centers with their own generators were able to keep operating with relative normality.
Faced with this situation, Loomis' technical teams deployed a fast and effective response: more than 70% of incidents were resolved remotely, minimizing site visits and ensuring service was restored in the shortest possible time. For the remaining ATMs, an in-person intervention was required, which underscores the importance of having professionals prepared for any circumstance.
In addition, demand for cash saw a sharp rise. Banks requested increases in their ATM loads of 30% to 60% above usual levels. This figure not only reflects the growing need for cash in times of crisis, but also the trust people place in this means of payment when digital access is compromised.
Cash offers a unique advantage: its independence. It does not depend on electricity, a data network or computer systems. It is immediately available and universally accepted. In emergency situations, it provides security, autonomy and peace of mind to both individuals and small businesses.
At Loomis, we believe in a balance between innovation and tradition. Choosing cash does not mean giving up progress, but complementing our options to build a more resilient society. Cash is freedom: it allows us to choose how, when and where to manage our own money, without depending exclusively on technological solutions.
That's why, now more than ever, it's essential that we all recognize the role of cash in our economy. Not only as a tool of the past, but as a pillar of the present and the future. Having cash available gives us power, autonomy and, above all, security in a world full of uncertainty.
Let's protect and encourage the use of cash as an essential part of our daily lives!
